GSU officer Kirwa faces mental assessment

By TONY MUSISI

An Eldoret court has ordered General Service Unit (GSU) officer Nathan Kirwa, accused of fatally shooting a nurse in an alleged love triangle, to undergo a mental assessment before he is arraigned before a High Court judge to take plea in the murder case.

Kirwa, who was attached to the security detail of first-term Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, has been in police custody since his arrest more than two weeks ago.

The victim, Dorris Murei, 45, worked at Uasin Gishu County Referral Hospital before she was allegedly shot dead on August 30 near the Eldoret State Lodge.

In a ruling that took less than five minutes, Eldoret Deputy High Court Registrar Daniel Sitati directed that Kirwa be escorted by prison officers to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for the mental assessment.

He further ordered that Kirwa be transferred from Eldoret Central Police Station, where he has been held since his arrest, to Eldoret GK Remand Prison pending the outcome of the assessment and his arraignment before the High Court.

Sitati also assured Kirwa that he would be represented by a lawyer whose legal expenses would be met by the government.

“The suspect will from today be held at Eldoret GK Remand Prison and not the Central Police Station custody pending the outcome of the mental assessment report and also his arraignment in the High Court for the murder case,” ruled Sitati.

The case will be mentioned on October 1, 2026, to confirm compliance with the court orders.

Kirwa was arrested by a team of armed police officers following a six-hour manhunt after he was linked to the killing of Murei, who was popularly known as Dori.

The GSU officer is alleged to have shot Murei multiple times inside a bar on the evening of Sunday, August 30, 2026.

According to a police report, Kirwa allegedly arrived at the bar while armed with a concealed firearm before walking directly towards Murei and opening fire.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani, while addressing the media a day after the incident, said the officer fired five times at Murei, killing her on the spot.

“He went straight to the lady whose name is Dorris Murei, who is popularly known as Dori, and began shooting her. He shot her five times,” said Sicharani.

Murei was buried at her husband’s home in Chemalingot area, Tiaty Sub County, Baringo County, a week ago in a ceremony attended by family members, friends, nursing colleagues and other mourners
