Police hunt hospital defilement suspect

By TONY MUSISI

Police in Uasin Gishu County are searching for a subordinate staff member at a private hospital in Eldoret City who is alleged to have defiled a minor while she was receiving treatment at the facility.

According to police, the alleged incident occurred on July 21 at Living Room International Hospital along the Eldoret–Kaptagat Road. The matter was reported by the girl’s parents at Ainabkoi Police Station, prompting investigations.

Ainabkoi Sub-County Police Commander Charles Getende confirmed the incident, saying detectives had launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.

“We are pursuing the suspect, and it is only a matter of time before he is arrested to face justice over the alleged offence,” said Getende.

Police said the suspect, who worked as a cleaner at the hospital for about 10 years, fled after the incident. Preliminary investigations indicate that his last known mobile phone signal was traced to Kitale Town in Trans Nzoia County.

Getende said detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were treating the matter with the urgency it deserves.

“Sexual offences, particularly those involving minors, are treated as serious crimes. Our officers are working tirelessly to apprehend the suspect and ensure that due process is followed,” he said.

The police commander appealed to members of the public to volunteer any information that could help investigators trace and arrest the suspect.

The suspect’s identity has not been released as police continue with investigations.

According to the victim’s family, the girl had been taken to the hospital by her parents for treatment and was asked to provide a stool sample.

The family alleges that while the minor was in the hospital washroom, she encountered the cleaner, who allegedly sexually assaulted her.

The victim’s parents, who requested anonymity to protect the child’s identity, said the incident has left their daughter deeply traumatised and unable to resume her normal school routine.

“I am shocked that such an alleged incident could occur in a hospital founded on the principles of providing dignified care to patients and supported by churches and Christian donors both locally and internationally,” the girl’s father said.

He also questioned the hospital’s response, claiming the management had not done enough to reassure the family that appropriate action was being taken following the incident.

“It is unfortunate that, since the alleged incident occurred, we have not received adequate assurance from the hospital that everything possible is being done to support the pursuit of justice for our daughter,” he said.

When contacted for comment, the hospital’s director, Titus Boit, declined to discuss the allegations, citing the ongoing police investigations.

“We are unable to comment because the matter is under active police investigation,” Boit said.

According to its public profile, Living Room International Hospital is a faith-based Level 4 health facility located about 9.4 kilometres from Eldoret City along the Eldoret–Kaptagat Road.

The 91-bed hospital is operated by Living Room Ministries International, a Christian organisation founded by Pastor David Tarus. The institution was established with support from local and international Christian partners and integrates faith-based values into its healthcare services.

Living Room Ministries International is registered as a Christian non-profit corporation in the State of California, United States.
