Ndindi opposes Ebola quarantine plan

By JANE WAITHIRA

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has cautioned the government against proceeding with plans to establish a quarantine centre for Ebola patients in Kenya, arguing that doing so would disregard the will of the people.
Nyoro claimed it would be wrong for the government to endanger the lives of Kenyans for financial gain, alleging that the move is being driven by greed rather than public interest.
According to the MP, Kenyans have already expressed their opposition to the proposal, yet the government appears determined to proceed with the plan.
“The opinion of the people must be respected because they are the ones who elected leaders into office,” he said.
“Some of us leaders have already stated our position on the matter, and as representatives of the people, the government should listen to us. Otherwise, the people will speak directly,” he added.
Nyoro further argued that if the government insists on implementing the plan, then the officials behind it should personally receive any incoming patients.
“We want to see them welcoming and receiving the patients at the airport before they proceed to the quarantine centre,” he said.
The legislator accused the government of taking unnecessary risks with the lives of Kenyans and vowed to oppose any such move.
“We saw what happened when our police officers were sent to Haiti. The matter faded away after challenges emerged, and we should not repeat such mistakes,” he said.
“The government should not put the lives of Kenyans on the line. We will not allow this kind of recklessness,” added Nyoro.
He urged leaders across the political divide to set aside partisan interests and instead focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens.
Nyoro cited the high cost of living and rising fuel prices as some of the pressing challenges that Parliament should prioritize.
“I know some leaders have been compromised, and sadly they are unable to pursue issues that directly affect the common mwananchi,” he claimed.
The MP also alleged that public resources were being mismanaged and diverted while critical sectors continue to suffer from inadequate funding.
“It is saddening that sectors such as health and education are struggling due to a lack of resources, yet there are allegations of public funds being hidden away instead of being used to serve the people,” he said.
