Ochieng Warns ODM over Ugenya seat in 2027

MDG party leader David Ochieng has warned ODM to forget about winning the Ugenya parliamentary seat in 2027, insisting that only an MDG candidate vetted and trusted by his party will take over the constituency.
Ochieng said he does not fear any competitor eyeing the seat, adding that none matches his development record in Ugenya.
Speaking in the constituency, the lawmaker said although he is targeting the Siaya governorship in 2027, he will not abandon Ugenya residents and will continue offering political direction that strengthens both the electorate and the MDG party.
“I have laid a strong foundation in development and won the trust and confidence of voters. The legacy built over three terms must be protected. I will not allow an ODM candidate to ruin the standards we have set,” Ochieng said.
He regretted that Ugenya stagnated for years despite having leaders in powerful positions, arguing that some focused more on party affairs than on serving the public.
“When I was elected on an ODM ticket, I struggled in the hands of those close to party leadership. But after taking the oath of office, I changed the narrative. I worked even with those perceived as political enemies and delivered projects that transformed Ugenya,” he said.
Ochieng added that despite warnings from senior politicians against engaging the ruling government, he negotiated for development projects that drew voters closer to him.
“I don’t believe in politics of rhetoric or empty promises. Some leaders survive on that, but I chose a different path. It may have been bitter for some, but it is what has propelled my success,” he said.
He insisted that Ugenya will not be run by what he termed “gamblers or jokers” who serve political masters at the expense of public interest.
“I will personally guide whoever becomes the next MP for Ugenya, and that seat will be taken by an MDG candidate,” Ochieng said.
He assured residents not to panic following his gubernatorial declaration, saying his home and political base remain in Ugenya.
“Do not lose hope. I will not stay far from you. The same strategy that earned me this seat will be adopted again in 2027,” he said.
Ochieng dismissed fears of rigging, saying gains made in development would not be derailed by leaders without vision.
“The seat will not go to party worshippers who rise only after endorsements and photo opportunities,” he added.
The MDG leader also warned Kenyans to be wary of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his allies, accusing them of promoting divisive politics.
“We want Kenya governed by the rule of law. Some leaders seeking top office are preaching hatred and ethnicity, which has no place in modern Kenya,” Ochieng said.
He cited Gachagua’s remarks on student deployment to Central Kenya institutions, saying they shocked the country.
“Rigathi studied at the University of Nairobi. How then can anyone claim schools like Mangu host only Kikuyu students? Such reckless talk pushes Kenyans away,” Ochieng added.
