Ndindi tells Ruto: Leave Uhuru alone

By REBECCA WANGARI

People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has told President William Ruto and his allies to stop dragging retired President Uhuru Kenyatta into what he termed “dirty politics”.

Ndindi said the renewed attacks on Uhuru were uncalled for, accusing Ruto and his allies of looking for someone to blame after losing ground and public support.

Speaking during a tour of Kangema and Mathioya constituencies, Ndindi said Uhuru remained an influential political figure and had every right to participate in national politics like any other Kenyan.

He said the retired President should not become a target simply because he left State House, challenging Ruto to confront Uhuru publicly rather than allegedly sending his allies to attack him at political rallies.

“We know some of these leaders are being sent to public rallies to insult Uhuru, which is unacceptable and we are calling an end to it,” Ndindi said.

“If Ruto has a problem with his former boss, he should come out publicly and say it instead of sending people to attack him,” he added.

The PPK leader urged politicians to learn from the past and avoid reviving a culture of personal attacks that characterised previous election campaigns, describing such politics as spiteful.

He questioned why Uhuru had become a major topic of discussion for Ruto and his allies instead of the administration focusing on its agenda and addressing challenges facing Kenyans.

Ndindi also reminded Ruto that the presidency was temporary and urged him to consider how he would want to be treated after leaving office.

“Treat our former President with decorum, the way you want Kenyans to respect you when you retire next year,” he said.

“Let us stop the politics of spite and interfering with other leaders. Uhuru is a leader, he’s a voter, and we want him to be respected,” Ndindi added.

Ruto’s allies have recently renewed their criticism of Uhuru, accusing him of supporting and financing opposition activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

They have claimed that they made several attempts to repair their relationship with the former President but that he rejected their overtures and instead opted to work with opposition forces.

Uhuru has, however, dismissed the allegations and maintained that he has no interest in returning to active politics. He has instead called for Kenyans to be allowed to freely choose their leaders.

Call for Murkomen’s resignation

Ndindi also called for the immediate resignation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over what he described as increasing violence at political rallies.

He accused Murkomen of failing to discharge his constitutional responsibility of protecting citizens and suggested that the Cabinet Secretary’s political affiliation could be influencing the manner in which security matters were being handled.

“What happened in Homa Bay, where armed goons disrupted the meeting, is something that we cannot ignore, especially now that we are heading to the electioneering period,” he said.

“It’s unacceptable for people to attend political meetings carrying machetes and guns, with some of the groups involved being linked to the government,” Ndindi added.

The PPK leader also demanded an overhaul of the country’s security system, saying security agencies had failed in their duty to protect Kenyans attending political gatherings.

He said Kenyans should not continue witnessing violence at political meetings without those responsible for maintaining security being held to account.

Ndindi questioned why no arrests had been made despite claims that the identities of some of those involved in the violence were known.

He alleged that the failure to take action against the perpetrators raised questions about whether the government was willing to address political violence.

“The failure to act clearly indicates that the government isn’t willing to take any action against the perpetrators because it is the one sponsoring the goons,” he alleged.
