Robbers cooked supper during Sh2.4m raid

By TONY MUSISI

A second-year student at Kabarak University has narrated before an Eldoret court how three suspected robbers stormed his family home at night and held them at gunpoint before stealing goods valued at Sh2.4 million.

Edwin Mwangi told the court that the suspected robbers arrived on a motorcycle and stormed their home in the Njambini area, on the outskirts of Eldoret City, on the night of November 22, 2025.

The suspects, who are facing multiple robbery with violence cases in various courts in Eldoret, are Stephen Kamau, Patrick Mwangi, Titus Wainaina and Jeremiah Kinyanjui.

They are scheduled to appear before the Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court on August 31, 2026, in relation to a robbery with violence case, and before the Principal Magistrate’s Court on September 8, 2026, over a similar criminal offence.

The suspects are also facing murder charges before the Eldoret High Court in connection with the killing of a former pharmacist at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital eight months ago.

They are jointly charged with other suspects who are not before the court and are accused of robbing Richard Nyongus Rotich of his mobile phone while armed with an AK-47 rifle.

Court documents state that the suspects allegedly shot the medic dead during the robbery.

The court, presided over by Senior Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati, was treated to an unusual account when Mwangi narrated how one of the suspects cooked eggs and ugali for the group after complaining that they were hungry.

“One of the robbers told my mother to cook supper for them, saying they were feeling hungry. When she told them to take githeri in the kitchen, they reprimanded her, saying they could not eat such a meal,” Mwangi told the court.

He said his mother then directed one of the suspects to take eggs from a refrigerator in the kitchen and cook them with ugali for their supper.

Mwangi said the three suspects sat down and enjoyed their meal as he and his mother watched in disbelief from the sitting room.

The university student also told the court that after eating, the suspects engaged them in conversations about current political affairs and assured them that they did not intend to harm them.

“The robbers were so friendly to me and my mother after enjoying their supper, which was prepared by one of them. They even engaged us in a debate over the current politics taking place in the country,” he said.

Mwangi told the magistrate that on the fateful night, he was driving his father’s vehicle home when he was accosted by the suspects at the gate.

“They ordered me to alight from the vehicle immediately and lead them to my parents’ house at gunpoint,” he stated.

On entering the house, the court heard, the suspects terrorised his mother, who was watching television, as they demanded cash.

“They asked for cash from my sick mother while threatening her with dire consequences if she refused to heed their demands, as I lay on the floor of the sitting room on my stomach,” Mwangi said.

He told the court that his mother, Margaret Charagu, was forced to hand over her mobile phone to one of the suspects and provide her PIN.

The suspect allegedly used the phone to transfer Sh8,000 to the number of an accomplice.

The student further recalled that the suspect armed with an AK-47 rifle guarded the door, while another, armed with a panga, kept watch over him and his mother in the sitting room.

The third suspect, he said, ransacked the bedrooms in search of money and other valuables.

Mwangi was giving his evidence-in-chief in a case in which the suspects are charged with robbery with violence contrary to Section 296(2) of the Penal Code.

The prosecution alleges that on the night of November 21 and November 22, 2025, at Njambini area on the outskirts of Eldoret City in Uasin Gishu County, the suspects, jointly with others not before the court, robbed Edward Mwangi of his motor vehicle and assorted agrochemicals valued at Sh2.4 million.

According to the court documents, the suspects were armed with dangerous weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a panga, during the alleged robbery.

The hearing of the case was adjourned to September 25, 2026.
