Alarm as police report shows rising defilement, incest cases

A man has been arrested for defiling his 6-year-old daughter in Gekano village in Nyamira County. The 29-year-old single parent is said to have defiled the daughter on the nights of September 15 and 16, according to the local police commander. The matter was later discovered by the girl’s teacher who informed the local Chief before they lured the father to the school thereafter alerting officers from Manga police station. The victim was rushed to Esani sub-County Hospital where it was confirmed that she had been defiled and was later transferred to Nyamira County Hospital. “The minor was taken to hospital for medical review where it was confirmed that she had actually been defiled,” the local police commander said. Police warn that there could be an increase in sexual assault targeting young girls. The statistics are, however, mostly unreliable as most of such egregious crimes go unreported. The homes, generally considered havens of security and tranquility, with warm and loving family members, have ironically not been safe places for some young girls. In another case on September 5, a man was also arrested for defiling her daughter, aged 14 in Nyamagagana village of Kuria West in Migori County. Detectives said the child was staying with the father and her other siblings after the mother, who is mentally unstable, left home in August. The 40-year-old man was later charged in court. In Nyakembene village of Gucha South sub-County, a 15-year-old girl was also impregnated by her father.

The mother on September 3 noticed a change in the walking style and body of the girl and took her to Nduru Level 4 Hospital where it was confirmed that she was four months pregnant. The girl, who is mentally unstable and a pupil at Emesa Primary Special Need Education Unit. “The child revealed that her father, S.O.N, aged 51, was responsible for her pregnancy. When the father got the information, he escaped to unknown destination,” police said. The matter was also reported to Reformed Hearts Orphan Centre where the victim is currently admitted. In Kisii, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations into the death of a male convict who was serving a 15-years jail term for incest and defilement. George Morara Bisonga, who was convicted in November 2017 by Ogembo Chief Magistrate’s Court, fell sick on September 7 and was rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. He later died while undergoing treatment.
